Nicolás Maduro receives the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in Caracas

The Venezuelan Head of State, Nicolás Maduro, met yesterday night with the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, who is visiting Caracas to address issues related to Human Rights in that country and mutual cooperation agreements between both parties.

The meeting took place at the Miraflores Palace, the seat of the Venezuelan Government, and is part of the intention of both parties to strengthen the principle of “positive complementarity” established in the Rome Statute.

Venezuelan state television highlighted that the meeting between Maduro and Khan points towards the deepening of the protection of fundamental rights and the Venezuelan State bodies’ search for truth and justice.

The Venezuelan government described the meeting as cordial and reiterated that it is part of Caracas’ willingness to cooperate with the aforementioned international organization.

Maduro thanked Khan and his entourage for their visit to the Venezuelan capital.

Earlier, Khan met with the Attorney General of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, with whom he discussed detailed aspects regarding the basic rights of the population.

The Venezuelan prosecutor stated, after the meeting, that both parties reviewed the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Venezuelan State and the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court at the end of 2021.

This is Khan’s third visit to Caracas since he took office as ICC Prosecutor.
