The Brazilian government wants to create three million hectares of natural parks

The Brazilian government intends to create three million hectares of natural parks, Environment Minister Marina Silva announced on June 5 at an event to celebrate World Environment Day.

Among the measures announced are the “creation of three million hectares of conservation units”, the incorporation into the State of all public lands that have not been assigned a purpose, and the protection of 230,000 kilometers of land along riverbanks.

It is also planned to “seize 50%” of the illegally identified deforested area, expand the number of strategic bases, police stations, and airplanes of the Federal Police and the Armed Forces in the Amazon and hire 1,600 environmental analysts to act against deforestation.

To boost sustainable, productive activities, Lula’s government wants to create seals to certify bioeconomy products in the Amazon and bring electric power to 120,000 points to stimulate these projects.

The announcement comes a week after the Chamber, with a conservative majority, withdrew powers from the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples.

Marina Silva’s portfolio, for example, lost control of the National Water Agency and the rural environmental registry, a key tool for identifying deforestation on rural properties.
