Brazil’s current account records in April first external deficit for the month since 2019

Brazil’s external accounts recorded a deficit of US$1.68 billion last April, the first negative result for the month since 2019, Brazil’s Central Bank announced yesterday, Friday.

In April 2022, Brazil’s current account had a surplus of US$100 million

The current account comprises the trade balance, the services and income account, and unilateral transfers, that is, resources sent by Brazilians living outside the country.

According to the Central Bank, the external accounts registered a deficit of US$ 13.678 billion from January to April, compared to a negative result of US$ 16.468 billion in the same period of the previous year.

It added that the current account deficit in the last 12 months ended in April totaled 54.2 billion dollars, equivalent to 2.76 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The monetary authority reported that foreign direct investment in the country totaled US$3.312 billion in April.

Despite the positive volume, direct investment inflow fell 70 percent compared to April 2022, totaling US$11.084 billion.

Cumulative direct investment from 12 months to April totaled US$81.958 billion, equivalent to 4.17 percent of GDP.
