Japan is considering withdrawing visa requirements for Brazilians

The prime minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, announced on Friday (19) that he is considering removing the visa requirement for Brazilians to enter the country.

Kishida met with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Hiroshima, where they attended the G7 summit.

Japan is considering “procedures for the introduction of short-stay visa waivers for ordinary passport holders from Brazil,” the Japanese government said in a statement issued after the bilateral meeting.

Today, the Japanese do not need a visa to enter Brazil. Answering a call from the tourism industry, the requirement was removed in 2019 by then-President Jair Bolsonaro.

In addition to the Japanese, the former Chief Executive released visa-free entry for Americans, Australians, and Canadians.

On May 3, however, the government published the resumption of the tourist visa requirement for this group in the Official Gazette.

The rule will come into effect on October 1, 2023.

OTHER ISSUES

The Japanese government said that Tokyo would release “soon” a 30 billion yen (about R$1.09 billion) loan to Brasilia for health and other sectors investments.

Also, according to Kishida, Japanese companies “are paying close attention” to the tax reform being prepared by the Brazilian government.

Japan also congratulated Brazil for the candidacy to host the COP 30 (30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), said it will work with Lula to protect the environment, and defended once again the reform of the UN Security Council (United Nations).

“The 2 leaders reaffirmed the importance of fundamental values such as freedom and democracy and agreed to work together for the maintenance and strengthening of an international order based on the rule of law,” the Japanese government statement said.
