Brazil: Paraná state has the best four-month period of its history in exports

The international trade balance of the Brazilian state of Paraná registered the best performance of the first four months of the year in its history.

Exports totaled about US$7.3 billion in the period in 2023, a result 11.2% above the first four months of 2022 (US$6.5 billion) and the highest index of the historical series analyzed by the Secretariat of Foreign Trade of the Federal Government (Secex) since 1997.

The record performance of Paraná was pulled, above all, by the exports of chicken meat, with US$1.3 billion of accumulated exports in the year, equivalent to 17.6% of the total.

Soybeans also have a great weight in the state’s trade balance, with 16.5% of the total value of sales in the case of grain (US$1.2 billion), 7.4% in bran (US$536 million) and 3.8% in oil (US$276 million).

In proportional values, the highest increase between 2022 and 2023 was registered in grain exports, which went from US$135.5 million to US$450.3 million, a growth of more than 232% between the four quarters analyzed, making the product go from 2.1% to 6.2% of Paraná’s sales to the international market.

The performance in the exportation of machines and earthmoving and drilling equipment, with an 81.9% increase (US$110 million), followed by cargo vehicles (47.8% increase, reaching US$131 million) and chemical products (46.5% increase, reaching US$91.4 million), also contributed considerably to Paraná’s unprecedented result.

According to the President-Director of the Paraná Institute of Economic and Social Development (IPARDES), Jorge Callado, accelerating the state’s exports was already expected, considering the current pace of agricultural production.

“Moreover, Paraná has been registering a considerable increase in the exports of several manufactured goods, such as automobiles, which shows the productive diversification of the state,” he says.

This year, products manufactured in Paraná reached the markets of 175 countries.

Among the main destinations of Paraná’s production, China is the clear leader, with more than US$1.5 billion in the first four months of the year.

In sequence appear Argentina (US$502 million), the United States (US$443 million), and Mexico (US$311 million).
