Brazil: former vice president calls for “immediate interdiction'” of Congress against Dallagnol’s mandate removal

By Anderson Scardoelli

Former vice president of Brazil and current senator for the Republicans of Rio Grande do Sul Hamilton Mourão defended the idea that the National Congress should work to reverse the impeachment of federal deputy Deltan Dallagnol (Podemos-PR).

“Immediate interdiction” were the words spoken by Mourão in the Senate plenary on Wednesday, 17.

The senator’s request was directed to the President of the Senate – and consequently of the Congress – Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG). In Mourão’s view, the decision of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) against Dallagnol was “illegitimate”.

“The national moment does not allow silence nor irresponsible and incendiary outbursts,” said Mourão.

“The situation demands firm and clear positions that transcend the parties to converge in the common good of a healthy and mature democracy like the Brazilian one, but it is going through a crisis that cannot be hidden or ignored,” continued the senator.

In the Senate plenary, Mourão complained about what he defined as “politicians’ omission” against judicial decisions that, he emphasized, hurt the Constitution.

In addition, he accused the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, of spreading “desire for revenge”.

Finally, Mourão said he will wait for Pacheco’s decision on whether Congress should act against Dallagnol’s conviction.

THE CONVICTION CHALLENGED BY MOURÃO

The former federal prosecutor and coordinator of Operation Lava Jato in Curitiba, Deltan Dallagnol, was elected federal congressman for Podemos of Paraná in 2022 with over 300,000 votes, the highest vote-getter for the position in the state.

He held the parliamentary position until the beginning of this week, but had his mandate revoked by the TSE.

In a trial that ended unanimously, the Court understood that he tried to “circumvent” the Ficha Limpa (Clean Record )Law by leaving the Public Ministry under, according to the Court, the risk of being condemned in an administrative process.
