Chilean Government decrees “red alert” in the Araucanía region

Chilean Undersecretary of the Interior Manuel Monsalve has recognized that the region of La Araucanía is living in a “red alert” situation due to the instability in terms of security that the region is going through, even more so after the last incidents registered on Tuesday.

According to Monsalve, this measure implies the deployment of 50% of the security contingent “to carry out control and inspection tasks.”

In addition, two more helicopters will be deployed in the area, according to Chilean television channel T13.

Chilean authorities had declared a red alert in La Araucanía after a series of violent incidents registered between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning when shots were fired at the house of the elected constitutional councilor for the Republican Party, Héctor Urbán.

“Regarding Urbán’s family, we hope to be able to receive the constitutional councilor. We have taken steps for this meeting to occur.”

“There is a protection measure dictated around the family, and, therefore, there are police officers who are complying with the protection measure”, said Monsalve.
