Electoral Court sentences former mayor of Rio de Janeiro to eight years of ineligibility

The electoral judge Márcia Santos Capanema de Souza, from the 23rd Electoral Zone of Rio de Janeiro, determined on Thursday (13) the ineligibility for eight years of Marcelo Crivella (Republicans) for abuse of economic power in the 2020 election, when he ran for reelection as mayor of Rio de Janeiro.

Crivella is currently a federal congressman.

The defense will appeal the first instance decision and point out that the sentence has no immediate effect, O Globo reported.

The lawsuit was filed by the current mayor of Rio Eduardo Paes (PSD), who defeated Crivella in 2020.

“You reap what you sow! Lying and spreading fake news is a crime!” said Paes on Twitter.

The magistrate also ordered the revocation of Crivella’s mandate in the House of Representatives.

“In view of the mandate of Marcelo Bezerra Crivella, obtained in the Elections of 2022, I also commit the penalty of revocation of his diploma as Federal Congressman, under the terms of Complementary Law No. 64/90, Article 22, XIV,” says an excerpt of the decision.

According to the decision, Crivella’s party had distributed pamphlets claiming that Paes would support the legalization of drugs, abortion, and the so-called “gay kit” in schools.

The decision also covers Crivella’s vice president, Army Lieutenant Colonel Andreia Firmo.

She must return R$42,499.50 to the public coffers for “the confection of 1,500,000 pamphlets containing untrue information” about Eduardo Paes.
