Brazil: the city of São Paulo has over 52,000 homeless people, an increase of 8.2% in 2023, says survey

Nationwide, 206,000 people were living on the streets, which shows an increase of 7.4% since the last survey.

The state of São Paulo concentrates 86,782 people of this population.

That is, almost half of the Brazilian homeless population lives in the cities of São Paulo.

The POLOS-UFMG coordinator explains that in the last quarter of 2022, the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) demanded measures to update the CadÚnico (unified registry), and the numbers stopped being updated.

On the other hand, the Lula (PT) government stimulated the registry again, and the numbers grew again (see below the homeless population in other capitals).

“We don’t know if more people started living on the streets after November.”

“We saw that last year, in just three months (October, November, and December), more than 25,000 people had been summarily excluded from the CadÚnico.”

“Now, they are slowly reappearing”, said André Luiz Dias.

The street situation affects mainly the black population in our country.

For every ten people living on the streets, seven are black.
