Colombia: Petro hints that he will cease seeking to pass a political reform

Colombian President Gustavo Petro suggested this Thursday that the Government cease seeking approval of the political reform after the Historic Pact asked him a day earlier that it be shelved given “the lack of political will” of some benches to “change the rules of the game.”

“I think that in the political reform, there is no progressive issue left,” Petro said on his Twitter profile.

He added, about some of the proposals, that no agreement would have been reached, among other points, to guarantee parity in the lists or a state financing of campaigns.

“The reform does not contribute to an advance in the quality of politics,” Petro explained, referring to some of the proposals.

After a fierce day in Congress, the Historic Pact issued a statement calling Petro to shelve a reform that had gone from political to “politicking” and present a new project.

“It has been demonstrated how far the political and politicking class will go to be able to perpetuate itself”, lamented the party.

They disagree with a political reform establishing a revolving door whereby congressmen can be ministers and return to their seats during the legislative period and with closed lists without “parity, universality and alternation”.
