Paraguay and the US agree to develop Master Plan for Paraguay River navigability

Paraguay and the United States governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the Elaboration of a Master Plan for the Navigability of the Paraguay River.

Following this, Paraguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE) requested the consent of the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) as a member institution of the sector.

Subsequently, the MOPC will designate an agency responsible for accompanying or coordinating actions on the draft agreement, which the Legislative Branch must approve.

The document’s purpose is to prepare a master plan to improve navigation.

It includes formulating, evaluating, comparing, and selecting economically viable, socially and environmentally sustainable, and technically sound alternatives for the navigability of the Paraguay river in the Paraguayan section from the confluence with the Apa river to the junction with the Pilcomayo river.

The studies to be carried out will be designed and executed by competent national agencies with the technical support of the US Army Corps of Engineers.
