Ecuador’s parliamentary commission completes a request for the impeachment of the president

The parliamentary commission that presented the impeachment request against Ecuador’s president, Guillermo Lasso, for the ‘El Gran Padrino’ case is working on completing the proposal so that it can be forwarded to the Constitutional Court, which will analyze its admissibility.

“We are working with the teams on what we are going to refer to the Legislative Administration Council (CAL)”, said legislator Viviana Veloz, representative of the opposition coalition Union for Hope (UNES), to local media.

The legislator specified that they are completing the information regarding articles 278 and 281 of the Integral Organic Penal Code (COIP) on the crimes of extortion and embezzlement, for which the Ecuadorian president is accused.

Veloz presides over the legislative commission that proposed to impeach President Lasso after the allegations of a corruption network that sold positions and contracts in the public sector, in which his brother-in-law, businessman Danilo Carrera, was pointed out as the head.

According to preliminary findings, the head of state was aware of two reports that warned about the alleged corruption and the links of political operators close to the government with the Albanian mafia.

One of the released audios indicated that Lasso’s electoral campaign had received a contribution of one and a half million dollars from drug trafficking.

However, the president did not proceed to file the complaint so that the corresponding investigations could be carried out.
