The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said Tuesday that the possible arrest of former US President Donald Trump for alleged bribes to a porn actress is aimed at preventing the tycoon from running for president in 2024.
“If it were so (and Trump is arrested), everyone would know, because we are not sucking our thumbs, that it is so that he does not appear on the ballot,” defended the Mexican president, who said that in the past he also suffered “the fabrication of a crime”.
Thus, López Obrador has asserted that the crimes that Trump is accused of are “for an alleged love affair”, and in his comparison to what happened to him in the past, he has stressed that it is a “completely undemocratic” trick because the population is prevented from choosing the political representative in whom they trust.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office in New York offered Trump to testify in the framework of a case of alleged bribery of pornographic actress Stormy Daniels to buy her silence about an extramarital affair, which materializes the idea of criminal charges being imposed against him.
Former President Trump warned this weekend that he would be arrested his Tuesday, citing an “illegal leak” without giving details about its origin.
He also urged his supporters to mobilize in the face of this possible announcement.
