Chile’s Constitutional Court declares Boric’s pardons legal

On Tuesday, the Constitutional Court of Chile rejected the requests to invalidate the pardons granted in December by President Gabriel Boric.

This way, it declares legal the controversial measures granted by the president, which have received harsh criticism from the opposition.

The appeal, presented by parliamentarians from Chile Vamos and the Demócratas movement, challenged seven of the thirteen pardons.

Among them, one was granted to former guerrilla fighter Jorge Mateluna and the other to six other detainees who had previous convictions in the framework of the 2019 riots.

The Executive acknowledged at all times certain irregularities when granting the pardons since the main requirement marked by the authorities was that the beneficiaries must have been detained in the framework of the protests.

This was the first time in history that the traditional presidential pardons granted at Christmas time had been taken to court by the opposition.

The controversy led to the resignation of Marcela Ríos and Matías Meza as head of the Ministry of Justice and the Presidential Chief of Staff, respectively.
