Brazil: leftists set fire to Central Bank’s president Campos Neto dummy – video

Leftist militants set fire to a dummy of the Central Bank president, Roberto Campos Neto, during a protest at Paulista Avenue.

The act occurred on Tuesday morning, 21, and was attended by social movements and trade unions.

The group claims that the basic interest rate, at 13.75% a year, hinders economic development and job creation.

The activists say that only the financial sector benefits from this measure.

During the demonstration, the leftists barbecued sardines.

The animal would metaphorize the poorest, who the (wealthy) sharks would devour.

PRESSURE ON THE CENTRAL BANK

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said he would continue to pressure the Central Bank to lower the basic interest rate.

“I will keep on fighting so that we can reduce the interest rate,” said the Brazilian President during an event broadcast on the Internet.

According to him, the basic interest rate practiced in Brazil is absurd.

“At a moment when we have the highest interest rate in the world, when there isn’t a demand crisis, there isn’t excess demand,” he pointed out.

The Monetary Policy Committee meets this Tuesday to set the Selic rate.

The group meets every 45 days, on average, to determine the value of the index.
