Colombia: Petro opens a second peace process with FARC dissidents

On Monday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced opening a “second peace process” with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) terrorists who did not join the one agreed upon in 2016.

“A second Peace process begins. A table will be established between the government and the Central General Staff,” Petro has informed in a message posted on Twitter.

Petro’s text also responds to a message published by Caracol Radio highlighting that “the Colombian attorney general, Francisco Barbosa, has suspended the arrest warrants against 19 guerrillas led by alias ‘Iván Mordisco’ with whom there will be approaches to negotiate a peace process.”

Barbosa has indicated that “these arrest warrants are suspended based on the legal and constitutional capacities of the President of the Republic which are determined, in that, for him, this organization gives it a political character to negotiate peace agreements with the national government”.

These negotiations with the FARC are in addition to those currently underway with the other major guerrilla organization in the country, the National Liberation Army (ELN).
