International donations received by Cape Verde fell by almost half in 2022 to less than €20 million, according to data from the Ministry of Finance.
According to a report on budget execution from January to December 2022 by the Ministry of Finance, these transfers – which involve food aid, direct donations, and support from governments or international organizations – amounted to nearly €336.2 million in 2021.
The report also maintains that these transfers fell by 46.5 % to €19.3 million in the whole of last year.
This performance is justified by the 31.1% increase in food aid in 2022, worth €1.1 million, but mainly by the 17.9% drop in transfers from international organizations, in this case, explained by “the non-entry of donations to finance projects in the period under review.”
These donations received by Cape Verde already fell practically 24% in 2021, compared to the previous year, to €36.2 million, indicate data from the Ministry of Finance reported earlier by Lusa.
This performance still compares with the €47.5 million transfers Cape Verde received in 2020.
The Cape Verdean government acknowledged in late October that it still needs external support of €40 million to finance measures to mitigate the crisis caused by the escalating prices in food and energy, a process it hoped to close in 2023.
