Brazilian far-left PCO party says ‘crime of LGBT-phobia is legal aberration’

The far-left Workers’ Cause Party (PCO) said on Monday, 13 that the crime of LGBTphobia is a “legal aberration.”

The issue came up again after federal congressman Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) criticized the occupation of biological women’s spaces by trans people.

“It was not approved by the National Congress, which is the only institution that has the power to create national laws, but by an ‘interpretation’ of the STF,” the party posted on Twitter.

“To accept this ‘crime’ is to allow the Judiciary, elected by no one, to impose a dictatorship.”

Last week, the PCO spoke out against the attempted impeachment of federal congressman Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) for speaking out during a speech on the House floor on March 8.

“It is a medieval policy,” stated the PCO on Thursday, 9.

“Any citizen has the right to freedom of expression. Moreover, a parliamentarian is elected by the people precisely to speak. The left should not support censorship.”

The PCO noted that the parliamentarian is the most-voted congressman in Brazilian history, with almost 1.5 million votes.

“He is from the former president’s party, which has the largest bench in the National Congress. If his mandate is revoked for saying this, it would further increase the precedent for revoking any parliamentarian in the country.”
