Brics Bank begins change of command; Lula wants Dilma in the chair

The New Development Bank (NDB), also known as Brics Bank, announced on Friday (10) the transition process for the departure of current president Marcos Troyjo.

The command must be assumed by Dilma Rousseff (PT), as has been indicated by president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

Dilma’s choice, however, will only be confirmed after the election of the bank’s members, scheduled for after Troyjo’s official departure on March 24.

The date is close to the one set for Lula’s trip to China, on the 28th – the NDB headquarters are in Shanghai.

NDB’s website statement does not mention Rousseff’s appointment, only stating that the new president will be in rotating command of the bank until July 2025.

“In line with the Bank’s procedures and high standards of governance, the election process for the position of NDB President is being conducted in a smooth and orderly manner,” it says in a statement (read the complete information).

According to the NDB, Troyjo’s tenure since July 2020 has seen the institution become “the leading development bank for emerging economies,” introducing an organizational structure geared towards more complex and specialized private sector operations, focusing on project portfolio management.

It also reports that Troyjo leaves the bank with a US$10 billion capital paid in by its founding members and with nearly 100 projects in member countries in sectors such as clean energy, transportation infrastructure, irrigation, water resource management and sanitation, urban development, social infrastructure, and environmental efficiency.

The NDB was established in 2014, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
