Brazil once again requires visas from citizens of 4 previously exempt countries

The Brazilian government is reinstating visa requirements for tourists from the United States, Canada, Japan, and Australia.

The decision, taken on Wednesday (8), has already been forwarded to the local embassies so that the countries are notified of the change.

The exemption from visa requirements for travelers coming from these nationalities was granted by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in 2019.

This was at the request of the tourism sector, which saw the action as a way to attract foreign visitors to the country.

There was resistance from Itamaraty to understanding that there was no reciprocity in the decision.

According to the evaluations of the assistants of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the exemption did not generate an increase in the number of foreigners visiting Brazil.

According to the government, the number of tourists has remained stable, and in some cases, a drop has been registered.

The administrative procedures for reinstating the visa requirement are already being taken, but it should still take a few weeks.
