São Paulo government blocks GloboPlay and Netflix in state schools

The São Paulo Secretary of Education has blocked access to social networks and streaming platforms in state schools.

Since February 13, students can no longer access popular applications such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

Other services, such as Netflix and GloboPlay, have also been interrupted in connections through the wi-fi signal or connected internet.

The Secretariat of Education said that the blocking in the 5,500 state schools does not prevent the use of the content for pedagogical purposes in the classroom, as provided in the São Paulo curriculum.

The secretariat made a communiqué available to the schools in the state network.

In a note, the secretariat communicated that “there are no restrictions for analysis, re-readings, discussions, and reflections on social networks and the themes addressed therein.”

According to the state department, the measure aims to focus on developing quality learning “without dispersion to content considered inappropriate,” it said.

“The Secretary of Education supports the connection of technologies and applications to the state network in favor of strengthening pedagogical practices, including increasingly adopting digital educational resources.”
