On Wednesday, former Colombian President Ivan Duque reproached President Gustavo Petro’s actions to negotiate peace with guerrilla terrorist groups such as the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
Duque slammed the process led by Colombia’s current government, asserting that Petro’s so-called “total peace” could become more of a “fatal peace.”
“Opening spaces of impunity for them could turn ‘total peace’ into ‘fatal peace’,” said the former head of state amid Petro’s decision to request the suspension of an arrest warrant against terrorist Javier Alonso Veloza García, alias “Jhon Mechas”.
Veloza García is known, among other things, for having attempted Duque’s own life while he was visiting the city of Cúcuta in June 2021.
Recently, the Colombian government requested both alias “Jhon Mechas” and a score of other subversives to be removed from the lists of people with arrest warrants issued by the South American country’s justice system.
“They are people who have made a mockery of the generosity of the State for the construction of peace. They have been dedicated to drug trafficking, kidnapping, illegal mining, and all sorts of criminal activities and have enjoyed the protection of the dictatorship of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela,” said Duque about people included in such lists.
