Proposal to replace National Force is ready, says Brazilian Minister of Justice

The Lula da Silva government is expected to present, in the coming weeks, a proposal for the creation of a permanent National Guard.

The objective is to act in special operations, such as in indigenous lands, and to protect federal buildings in Brasília, in the Federal District (DF).

The initiative replaces the National Force.

“President Lula thinks that the National Force, as something temporary, does not fulfill the proper role,” said the Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, in an interview with Empresa Brasil de Comunicação on Thursday 25.

“He himself asked for the wording. We drafted it, it is ready. It will be an institution dedicated to the security of civic areas, but it will be able to act in border areas, indigenous territories, and conservation units.”

According to Dino, the guard will be similar to the National Force, but with its own command.

The protection of the Union areas, such as the Ministries Esplanade, the Three Powers Square, and official residences would become an attribution of the National Guard.

The minister ruled out the possibility of federalizing the Public Security of the Federal District, which should remain under district command.

The goal is for the corporation to be civilian, but ostensive.

The entrance into the troop would be through a special competition, unlike the National Force, which has police officers that work in several areas of the country.

“At some point, there may be an extremist governor in the Federal District,” said Dino.

“So the security of the Congress, the Supreme Court, the Planalto Palace, would be subject to the problems of local politics? It can’t. And this is a mistake that President Lula now wants to correct.”
