Brazil: corn exports in December hit the highest level in history

Brazilian corn exports in December 2022 set a new record for the sector in the month. In all, shipments reached 6.4 million tonnes.

This amount is almost 90% greater than Brazil’s corn exports in December 2021. In addition, it represents 140 million tonnes more than the previous record for the month, recorded in 2015.

Grain shipments made in the last month of 2022 brought the country almost US$2 billion. Thus, there was an increase of about 150%, compared to the same period in 2021.

“The high volume exported in December already accounts for 1.1 million tonnes, destined for China, which improves the prospects for marketing the cereal to the Asian continent this year”, explains Allan Silveira, superintendent of Market Studies and Supply Management of the National Supply Company. The Asian giant started importing this grain from Brazil in November.

In 2022, corn exports from Brazil totaled 43 million tonnes. Sales earned Brazilian farmers around US$12 billion.

According to the National Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock, the country’s crops produced 113 billion tonnes of grain.

That is: around 70 million tonnes (most of the production) were destined for the domestic market.
