Growing mistrust: Lula relieves 40 military personnel guarding presidential buildings

According to a resolution published this Tuesday in the Official Gazette of the Union, the Brazilian Government decided to relieve 40 military personnel who were guarding the buildings of the Presidency of the Republic.

The decision was made by the Ministry of the General Secretariat of the Presidency.

It covered Armed Forces members in charge of the special protection of the Planalto Palace and the official residences of Alvorada Palace and Granja do Torto in Brasília.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had said in a conversation with journalists last Thursday that he suspected that “the entrance” to the Planalto Palace (seat of government) was facilitated for the assault perpetrated by followers of former president Jair Bolsonaro against the headquarters of the three branches of government on Jan. 8.

The military officers were removed from their duties after the first lady, Rosángela da Silva, said that the presidential residence, the Alvorada Palace, was in poor building conditions, which is why she and the president temporarily reside in a hotel in Brasília.
