Electrified car sales grow 41% in Brazil and fleet exceeds 126,000 in 2022

Although many still have a certain prejudice with electrified cars, this segment has been conquering more and more Brazilians. The proof of this is in the number of registrations for this type of vehicle in Brazil in 2022.

From January to December last year, 49,245 units of hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and electric (BEV) cars were sold in the country.

That is, a significant increase of 41% compared to the same period of the previous year, when 34,990 cars had been licensed.

Still according to data from the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE), the highlight of the year in the sector were vehicles classified as HEV (non-plug-in hybrid cars). In all, 23,622 models were sold, representing a 62% share of the segment.

Plug-in hybrid cars (which use an external charging cable) reached the mark of 10,348 units registered in the year, up 20.4% over 2021, when 8,595 units were sold. Thus, the representativeness in the category was 21%.

Finally, electric cars (BEV) also grew significantly compared to the previous year. In 2022, the segment registered 8,458 vehicles, which represents an increase of 197% compared to 2021 (2,851 units) and a 17% share in the accumulated of 2022.

The increase in the sale of electric vehicles (BEV) is even more evident if the numbers are compared with 2020. At that time, these cars represented only 4% of the total sales of electrified vehicles, with only 801 registrations.

According to ABVE, the advance observed in sales of electrified vehicles may be related to the greater offer of models on the market, but also to the growth in charging infrastructure.

Today, 128 models of electrified light vehicles are offered in the country. In addition, there are currently around 3,000 charging stations spread across Brazil, and the trend is for this number to reach 10,000 by 2025.

With these total registrations, the electrified fleet now reaches 126,504 vehicles in Brazil.

Even so, the number is still far from being compared to that of combustion cars. That’s because this sector sold almost two million cars in 2022 alone.
