Latin America: Paraguay among top 5 gastronomic destinations

The catering sector in Paraguay has experienced great growth over the years, despite the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. That’s why the Taste Atlas website, which specializes in culinary culture, has included the landlocked South American country in its top 5 destinations with the best Latin American cuisine.

The report places Paraguay at number 5, primarily for its traditional chipa and tereré, as well as for the foods that are distinctive, such as vori vori soup and chipa guazú. Argentina is in fourth place, followed by Brazil, Peru and Mexico.

The President of the Association of Restaurants of Paraguay (Arpy), Oliver Gayet, believes that this peak is in part a success for the work of the guild.”People decide to come here to spend a weekend, to learn about our gastronomy and to visit our restaurants,” he explained, talking about the importance of having a variety of foreign food alongside their own, which also means an attractive international travel destination.

“Today there’s Japanese, Irish, Brazilian, French and German food, a variety of flavors that didn’t exist before. It allows us to differentiate ourselves in the world within the category,” he explained. He also mentioned that compared to Argentina and Chile, Paraguay has a great variety of wines, which is very appreciated by the tourists.

Regarding value for money, they reiterated that Paraguay is still a “cheap country”. To give context, he used Argentina as an example, pointing out that even though the neighboring country is going through a crisis and its currency is still devaluing, a meal in a good restaurant in Buenos Aires costs between US$80 and US$100. He says a family of four can dine for around US$50 at a good restaurant in Asuncion.
