Argentina: the attempt to impeach the president of the Supreme Court is rejected

The Argentine opposition coalition Juntos por el Cambio has rejected on Monday the impeachment trial announced by President Alberto Fernández against the head of the Supreme Court of Justice, Horacio Rosatti.

“The outdated claim of the president of the nation and Kirchnerism to request impeachment of the president of the Supreme Court of Justice is a new attack that seeks to intimidate and undermine the powers of the State,” they said in a statement, collected by the newspaper ‘Clarín’.

In this sense, the opposition alliance led by Mauricio Macri has expressed that these “desperate” maneuvers show that the government seeks “impunity.” “They only care about themselves and their legal cases,” they added.

Fernández assured in a letter published on Sunday on his official Twitter profile that he would impeach Rosatti. After that, in an interview with C5N he recalled the trip of judges, prosecutors, officials and media businessmen to Lago Escondido, which the Government has attributed to a shadow plot.

Fernández and his number two, Vice President Cristina Fernández, have spared no criticism in recent months against the judicial leadership, which they consider to serve the political interests of opposition leaders such as Macri. Both frame within this alleged persecution the recent sentence against the vice president for corruption.
