Itaipu hydroelectric power plant reaches new historical record in power generation

The Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, shared between Paraguay and Brazil, reached this Tuesday 2,900 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy generated since the beginning of its operations in May 1984, informed the right bank Binational Entity (Paraguayan side).

This is a historical milestone as no other hydroelectric power plant has been able to generate it.

This new milestone for the binational enterprise, a world leader in the generation of clean and renewable energy, reinforces the strategic importance of the hydroelectric power plant for the sustainable development and energy security of the two co-owning countries.

According to the binational company’s official report, among the factors that have contributed to this achievement are the optimal maintenance of the facilities and the operational efficiency, which are supported by a qualified staff of professional engineers and technicians, in addition to the time elapsed of 38 years and seven months.

It also highlights the high availability of equipment such as generating units, transmission lines, and transformers, which imply the fulfillment of business goals defined by the entity’s senior management to meet the high demand for energy in both countries.

Currently, the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant is undergoing a process of Technological Updating, the most ambitious project after the dam’s construction.

With this renovation and modernization of the plant, promising results are expected in relation to equipment reliability and power generation, among other positive factors.
