The city of São Paulo once again offers free public transportation for seniors over 60

The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), determined this Thursday, Dec. 15, the return of free public transportation for people over 60 years.

As published in the municipal Official Gazette, the measure is already in force.

During Bruno Cova’s (PSDB) administration, people between 60 and 64 lost the free ride, which was restricted to seniors over 65 years old.

Those who receive the benefit must issue the Special Senior Citizen Single Ticket by registering with São Paulo Transport (SPTrans).

The free ticket for trains and subways is still valid for people 65 and older. It is expected that the state governor, Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB), will follow the city hall’s decision, but there is still no date for such a change.

The return of free transportation occurs due to a decision by the São Paulo Court of Justice, which published a ruling considering the unconstitutionality of a part of a law passed in the City Council in December 2019, which suspended the benefit in the São Paulo capital.

Mayor Ricardo Nunes also opened an extraordinary credit in the amount of R$170 (US$32) million for the municipality to expand the municipal transportation subsidy as fare compensation for the bus system.
