Brazilian Senator Girão launches candidacy for the presidency of the Senate: ‘My great asset will be the Brazilian population’

Brazilian Senator Eduardo Girão (Podemos-CE), who is part of the allied base of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL, right), announced that he will run for the presidency of the Federal Senate in 2023.

To talk about the subject, he gave a live interview to the Jornal da Manhã, from Jovem Pan News, this Monday, 12.

He said he promised that, if elected, he would remove impeachment requests against STF ministers and approve the vote of at least one bill by each senator yearly.

In addition, Girão bets that, even if the current president is strengthened in the house, the Brazilian population will follow the electoral process and mobilize in his favor, contributing to him having more strength.

“I am sure that my greatest asset will be the Brazilian population, which will mobilize, which will watch this Senate election as a World Cup final, only this time, with Brazil playing and winning”, he said.

Asked about the candidacy of senator-elect Rogério Marinho (PL-RN), from President Bolsonaro‘s party, and the possibility of composition, so as not to divide the votes, Girão argued that, for him, having more candidates in the running for the command of the Senate is the best possible political scenario.

“The more candidates we have, the better, so that there is change, so that there is an alternation of power. The new president will only be elected when he has an absolute majority. Then, in a second or third round, because there can be several votes, certain specters come together to state their position. My entry into this race is with the aim of adding, collaborating with discussion and important agendas. I recognize the virtues of our former minister in the current government, Rogério Marinho, I also recognize the virtues of Rodrigo Pacheco, who is supported by Lula da Silva, although I deeply disagree with the way in which certain guidelines are being avoided, for example with regard to harmony and independence between the powers . The Senate is very poorly seen by Brazilian society in a legitimate way because it does not face, for example, requests for impeachment, which has almost 60 in the house. This has to be at least voted on. It is a commitment that I already assume with the Brazilian population. May we do this. We have already had two presidents of the Republic impeached, deputies and senators impeached, why not an investigation, with the right to full defense and contradictory, for STF ministers who are eventually committing abuses and leaving this house paralyzed because of the privileged forum. The end of the privileged forum and the return of the prison in second instance will also be guidelines that I would like to put forward”, said the senator.

He also assumed to see the favoritism of the current president of the house for his re-election, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).

“Rodrigo Pacheco is a strong candidate, he now has Lula da Silva’s support. And he is a candidate that, in order to have a strong Senate, we need to defeat. As a candidate, I am committed to democratizing the Senate’s bylaws. At least one project per senator, who represents society, will be voted on in the year. That’s the bare minimum. You have 81 senators. That each one has the right, even if he is not a friend of the king, that he can deliberate”, promised Girão.

“I’ve been here in the Federal Senate for four years, understanding it as the most important mission of my life, and I was frustrated with the last elections for the presidency of this house.”

“The first was Davi Alcolumbre, whose one of the first commitments, on the day of the inauguration, was to end ‘secrecy’, that is, open voting for President of the Federal Senate, was one of the reasons why he was elected, but then forgot.”

“Regarding Rodrigo Pacheco, I can’t even take the blame for that because I voted for another candidate, but I believe we need an alternation of power, change. Many projects, many shelved deliberations.”

“We need more democracy in the Federal Senate, to face certain legitimate demands of Brazilian society. And I intend to work to make the Senate more transparent, proud, and independent in this difficult time that Brazil will experience in the coming years.”

“It’s not easy. We know that President Rodrigo Pacheco has been working for a long time for his re-election, but you can be sure that we have already started contacting him and that I will do my best within the limit of my strength, even knowing my countless limitations and imperfections, for us to be able to win this election on February 1st”, he explained.
