Dollar rises to 5.18 reais after US elections

The definition in the mid-term elections in the United States and the disclosure of disappointing profits from financial institutions in Brazil pressured the financial market.

The stock market had a sharp drop and returned to 113 thousand points. The dollar oscillated a lot but closed higher.

The commercial dollar closed this Wednesday (9) and sold at R$ 5.182, with a high of R$0.038 (+0.74%).

The quotation had a day of ups and downs.

After rising to R$5.19 shortly after the business opening, it fell to R$5.13 shortly before 2:00 pm and rose again in the late afternoon.

The US currency was up 0.31% in November. In 2022, the currency accumulates a low of 7.07%.

The stock market had a troubled day.

The Ibovespa index, from B3, closed at 113,580 points, down 2.22%.

The indicator was pressured by the North American stock markets, which fell with the lack of definition in the legislative elections in the United States, held on Nov. 8, and by the fall in profit of a large bank in the third quarter, which was influenced by the increase in default.

The dollar had a day of increase against the main currencies reflecting the adjusted result of the vote that will define the control of the House and Senate of the United States in the remaining two years of the administration of President Joe Biden.

The vote tally did not confirm a significant GOP victory, with the Senate election in a critical state, Georgia, going to a runoff on Dec. 6.

In Brazil, the financial market was waiting for a definition around the mechanism that the government of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will choose to remove up to R$175 (US$33.6) billion from the spending cap in the 2023 Budget.

After meeting with the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, Lula said he preferred a proposal for an amendment to the Constitution to make the changes possible.
