Brazil’s VP Mourão wants constitutional amendment to end monocratic decisions in Supreme Court

Brazil’s Vice President Hamilton Mourão (Republican, right), 69, senator-elect for the Rio Grande do Sul state, defended in an interview with Poder360 the approval of a proposed constitutional amendment (PEC) to abolish monocratic decisions in the STF (Supreme Court of Justice).

“There must be an amendment to the Constitution that says decisions must be made either by the entire class or by the plenary of the STF,” the Army Reserve general said.

“I think the decision of a single judge that impacts the entire nation is complicated.”

Mourão has stated that he opposes increasing the number of Supreme Court justices.

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL, right) recently said he had received a proposal to that effect and could discuss the issue after the elections.

The measure, the vice president said, would be “casuistic,” would increase costs, and would no longer have the support of Bolsonaro’s allies if the candidate for the re-election of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT, left) loses the second round.

In the interview, Mourão also advocated that Congress impose a mandate on STF ministers.

“No human being is unaffected, let’s put it that way, by this position of staying 25, 30 or even 35 years as a Justice of the Supreme Court.”

General Antonio Hamilton Martins Mourão is 69 years old. He is married, has two children and five grandchildren.

He was born in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul.
