Increase of 97.9% in thefts in the Tijuca metropolitan area, north zone of Rio

The ISP data shows that Greater Tijuca’s theft almost doubled compared to the same period in 2021.

From January to August 2021, 2,912 thefts were recorded in the region. In the same period of 2022, 5,764 thefts were recorded in Greater Tijuca.

The increase was 97.9%.

Robberies also increased. In the same period, almost 1,000 more robberies were registered, an increase of 44.2%.

The data refer to the districts of Maracanã, Praça da Bandeira, Tijuca, Alto da Boa Vista, Andaraí, Grajaú, and Vila Isabel.

Residents report that crimes occur at all times of the day.

“No security. I’m tired of seeing robberies while walking my dog. I saw one yesterday in São Francisco Xavier,” says attorney Maria Lucia.

Residents don’t feel safe in their neighborhoods. “It’s dangerous; everywhere here is dangerous,” says Celso Luiz, a pensioner.
