Mozambique: Updated legal regime for foreign citizens

Mozambique has amended the Regulation of the Legal Regime for Foreign Citizens in the country, according to the official legal database Legis-PALOP+TL.

As of September 16, 2022, Crossing Posts will be competent to issue Visas for Investment Activity and Business Visas in addition to Border Visas.

From that date, the following new rules will apply to such types of visas:

VISA FOR INVESTMENT ACTIVITY

  • The minimum value of investment projects eligible for this visa is reduced from US$500 million to US$500,000;
  • The investment activity visa allows its holder to have multiple entries and stay up to 2 years for investment projects worth US$500,000 or more and five years for investment projects worth US$50 million or more, extendable for an equal period, as long as the reasons for granting it last.

BUSINESS VISA

  • It is granted to foreign citizens who travel to Mozambique to do business prospecting, carry out scientific research, participate in meetings, conferences, workshops, and general assemblies, establish contacts with companies and other similar events;
  • It becomes valid for multiple entries, allowing its holder to stay for up to 90 days, non-extendable, from the date of the first entry.

BORDER VISA

  • Intended to allow entry into national territory for foreign citizens from a country where there is no diplomatic or consular representation of the Republic of Mozambique, and may also be granted to foreign citizens from a country where there is an Embassy or Consular Representation of the Republic of Mozambique, for tourist purposes or those who, for duly justified reasons, could not apply for the respective visa;
  • It becomes valid for two entries, allowing its holder to stay for up to 30 days, non-extendable, from the date of the first entry.

Applications for the border, business, investment, and tourist visas can be submitted online through the portal of the National Migration Service (SENAMI).
