New Brazilian Congress elected for Bolsonaro continuity, says Chamber president

The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP, center-right), said Thursday (6) that the formation of the new National Congress on Oct. 2 was elected for “the continuity of the Bolsonaro government.”

He made the statement after a meeting with parliamentarians allied with the president at the Alvorada Palace.

“On the last day 2, the decisions that Brazil has made have left a very strong message for all Brazilians, with the tendency of the path that the people want for the next 4 years: a center-right Congress, a reformist Congress, a conservative Congress,” he said.

In a statement alongside the candidate for reelection, Jair Bolsonaro (PL, right), Lira said that the new composition of Congress “gives a path to the north that is already paved.”

Bolsonaro received dozens of elected allied congressmen and deputies at the Alvorada Palace.

“Today the parliament is more green and blue, less red. It’s a parliament that has a much better chance of passing things faster and easier,” Bolsonaro said in a statement to the deputies, senators, and governors in attendance.

Elected female deputies who support the president came out publicly to rebut the criticism, saying that the female electorate was on the side of the candidate for re-election.

Deputies Carla Zambelli (PL-SP), Silvia Waiãpi (PL-AP), and Senator-elect Tereza Cristina (PP-MS) issued statements in favor of Bolsonaro.

GOVERNORS ALSO SUPPORT

In addition to the allied deputies, the governors of six states also officially supported the president’s re-election in the second round of the election.

Four of them were re-elected in the first round in their states for the next four years, and two will compete in the second round on Oct. 30.

Declared their support for Bolsonaro in the Alvorada: the re-elected governors Antonio Denarium (PP-RR), Caiado (Union-GO), Gladson Camelli (PP-AC) and Mauro Mendes (Union-MT), as well as the candidates for re-election of Colonel Marcos Rocha (Union-RO) and Wilson (Union-AM).
