Dollar closes at R$5.40 and was the best investment in September

The commercial dollar closed at R$5.40 on Friday (30), consolidating as the best investment in September.

It recorded a gain of 3.71% during the month. The US currency was worth R$5.20 in August.

The second best-performing asset in September was gold. It increased by 2.19%.

Both the dollar and gold are financial assets considered safe by the market.

Due to the expectation of a slowdown in the global economy and the impact of the war in Russia and Ukraine, and the Covid-19 pandemic on global inflation, investors are acting with caution.

This makes the stock market more volatile.

Ibovespa, the main index of the B3 (São Paulo Stock Exchange), closed at 110,036 points on Friday (Sept. 30, 2022). It rose 0.47% in September.

BDRs (Brazilian Depositary Receipts) fell 8.38% during the month. These are assets issued in Brazil that represent shares of companies headquartered abroad.

In the last week alone, the Ibovespa fell 1.50%. In the United States, the Dow Jones fell 2.93%. The S&P 500 lost 2.91%.

The Selic Treasury bond yielded 1.16% in September.

The IPCA 2035 Treasury bond rose 0.05%. Savings accounts rose 0.68%. Ifix (real estate fund index) increased 0.49%. These investments outpaced inflation measured by the IPCA-15 (Amplified Consumer Price Index 15). In September, the rate was negative: -0.37%.

Bitcoin fell more than the inflation rate this month. On Friday (09), it fell 3.34% to US$19,413 by 6:30 pm.

RISK AND FOREIGN CAPITAL

The 5-year CDS (credit default swap), which measures confidence in the economy, registered 242 points on Friday (Sep.30). A year ago (Sep.30), it was 203.

Foreign investors withdrew R$525 million from the stock market by Wednesday (Sep.28), the latest data available.

Year to date, the balance is positive at R$69.6 billion. When considering first issues (IPOs) and secondary issues (follow-on issues), the result is positive at R$87 billion.
