Brazil: The most competitive cities in 2022

For the third year in a row, Barueri (São Paulo) is the most competitive municipality in Brazil, according to a survey conducted by the Center for Public Leadership (CLP).

Located in the metropolitan region of São Paulo City and with an estimated population of 279,700 inhabitants, it stands out in pillars such as fiscal sustainability, economic insertion and innovation, and economic dynamism.

The ranking podium is completed by Florianópolis (Santa Catarina), champion in human capital, and São Caetano do Sul (São Paulo), which has a good performance in pillars such as quality of education, safety, and economic insertion.

The CLP survey covers 415 cities with more than 80,000 inhabitants, where 127.9 million people live, or 59.96% of the Brazilian population.

Cities in the South and Southeast occupy all the top 20 positions in the Municipalities Competitiveness Ranking. But there are positive highlights spread throughout all regions.

Sobral, in the interior of Ceará, is a leader in quality education. Breves, in the state of Pará, Coari, in the state of Amazonas, and Sobral itself occupy the podium in the environment. And Sinop, in northern Mato Grosso, is among the top three in education.

The three cities that gained the most positions in the ranking between 2021 and 2022 are in São Paulo.

São Sebastião, on the northern coast, went from 175th to 60th place. Rio Claro, in the center-north, went up 103 places, reaching 117th place.

And Cruzeiro, in Vale do Paraíba, went from 295th to 204th. They advanced in the three dimensions of the ranking: economy, institutions, and society.
