General Paiva resigns as chairman of Chile’s Joint Chiefs of Staff over leaks of classified information

The Chilean Government has accepted this Thursday the resignation of the Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Guillermo Paiva, after information about the Armed Forces of the country was leaked through hacking.

This was announced by the Chilean Minister of Defense, Maya Fernandez, who also announced a summary investigation and presented background information to the military justice system.

“Minister Fernandez informed that the Government has accepted the resignation of the Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Major General Guillermo Paiva”, reads a statement released by the Chilean Ministry of Defense.

In this line, Fernandez has indicated that she has instructed an administrative summary investigation within the Joint Chiefs of Staff, while she has asked the Military Public Prosecutor’s Office to assume the representation of the Ministry of Defense in the corresponding investigations.
