Bolsonaro releases data showing how security has improved during his time in office

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has released some data showing how his government has improved the security of Brazilians.

Bolsonaro pointed out via his official Twitter account that the average annual number of violent deaths dropped from 61,000 per year during the administrations of Dilma Rousseff and Michel Temer between 2015 and 2018, to 48,000 per year during Bolsonaro’s tenure, or 20%.

The Brazilian president offers one explanation for the drop in violent deaths: Investment in public safety.

If in 2015-18, when Rousseff and Temer were at the helm of the executive branch, the average amount invested in security was R$1.7 billion (US$325 million), in the three full years that Bolsonaro has governed it has risen to R$1.9 billion (US$ 363 million).

Regarding the fight against drugs in his first three years in office, an annual average of 2,058.3 tons of marijuana and 166 tons of cocaine were seized.

To put these figures in context, the Brazilian president compared them to those of the year before he took office.

In 2018, 880 tons of marijuana and 99 tons of cocaine were seized. That is, under Bolsonaro, annual seizures of marijuana increased by 133.89% and those of cocaine by 67.67%.

In addition to drugs, security forces seized R$3.9 billion in drug trafficking assets during those three years.

Some of this money was used to equip the police to fight crime.

Another part was allocated to the National Drug Control Fund to finance the recovery and treatment of drug addicts.
