Nicaragua plans to import more wheat from Russia, as it is a product that is within the basic needs and exempt from sanctions, Finance and Public Credit Minister Ivan Acosta told Sputnik.
“We hope to continue maintaining trade channels and, in addition, to increase wheat imports. Right now, we are already importing the first purchase of 2023; it is already in Managua,” Acosta stated.
Asked whether Nicaragua is considering joining a Russian version of the SWIFT payment system, the minister said they had always been “in favor of having more options”.
“We applaud what the Russian Federation is building as a payment system option. It is always much better to have new options,” he said.
The official, who spoke to Sputnik during the VII edition of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, highlighted the importance of this event to attract investments to Nicaragua.
According to him, the Russian-Nicaraguan Joint Commission took advantage of the forum to organize a meeting with a broad agenda of about 15 points, including promoting bilateral cooperation in trade, transport, medicine, vaccines, and joint investments.
