Paraguay has the cheapest pork in South America

According to a report by the Paraguayan Association of Pig Producers (APPC), at the end of August, Paraguay had the lowest price for pork in South America.

According to the report, the Paraguayan pig sector registered a value of US$1.25 per kilogram of live weight, the lowest price for animals brought to slaughterhouses in the region.

Uruguay recorded the highest prices in the region: US$2.13 per kilogram, followed by Colombia with US$2.03, Chile with US$1.93, Argentina with US$1.86, and Brazil with US$1.39.

The report mentioned that China, Russia, and Mexico recorded a price of US$3.14, US$2.07, and US$1.94, respectively.

The national and regional surplus continues to be a very worrying factor for the sector, as it leads to lower prices.

Jorge Ramírez, president of the “APPC”, pointed out that an increase in production costs accompanies the devaluation.

This price is the lowest since January 2022, when it reached the value of US$1.40 per kilogram.

“In the Paraguayan pig industry, one sector produces exports and the other for domestic consumption. The small and medium farms work on the domestic market, and their revenues are declining,” Ramírez said.

He explained that the international market pays US$1.25 per kilogram of live cattle, while producers in the local market receive an average of US$0.94.

On the other hand, Ramírez said that production costs are still relatively high, which is why farms continue to operate with a negative balance of about twenty-five percent for each kilogram produced.

Although the drop in the price of corn, a cereal essential for production, has brought a slight respite, the price remains unstable.
