Brazil: São Paulo’s Museu do Ipiranga to reopen after 9 years closed

After nine years closed and a millionaire renovation, the Ipiranga Museum will reopen on Wednesday, September 7, as part of the celebrations of the Independence bicentennial. The works allowed, besides the restoration, the expansion of the space.

On the first day of operation, the historic building in Vila Monumento, in the south zone of São Paulo, will only open its doors to public schools, construction workers, and their families. Visits by the general public will resume on Thursday (September 8, 2022).

Of the R$235 million (US$45 million) invested in the project, 78% (R$183 million) were funds obtained through the Rouanet Law. In this mechanism, people and companies can submit cultural projects to the Special Secretariat of Culture, linked to the Ministry of Tourism, which must evaluate the proposal.

If the agency approves, the author can seek companies or individuals interested in financing the project. In exchange, the supporters can deduct a portion or the entire amount invested from their Income Tax.

In addition to the money raised through the Rouanet Law, the São Paulo state government invested R$34 million. Of the total, R$15 million were destined for the Monument Building and R$19 million for the restoration of the French garden.

The other R$18 million were invested by companies but without fiscal compensation.

THE NEW MUSEUM

The museum was enlarged to 6,800 m² and will have an integrated entrance to the French garden, the ticket office, the café, the store, and the auditorium for 200 people. The new space also has a temporary exhibition room of 900 m².

Twice the size, the museum will be able to hold 11 simultaneous exhibitions. The museum is expected to receive up to 1 million visitors per year.

The French garden, located in front of the monument building, was also revitalized and now has a restaurant, public lighting, space for street food, and the reactivation of the central fountain.

VISITATION AND EVENTS

Visitation will open to the general public on September 8 from 11 AM. Tickets will be available on the museum’s website. Until November 6, admission will be free.

The São Paulo State Secretariat of Culture has also organized a festival for the reopening week. Among the attractions are performances by Osesp (São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra), singers Duda Beat and Geraldo Azevedo, and a drone ballet.
