The Chilean deputy Gonzalo de la Carrera hit in the face the deputy and vice-president of the Lower House, Alexis Sepúlveda, after an argument that was generated at the end of the session.
“Deputy De la Carrera assaulted me in the face with a fist blow and later, with some kicks in the legs,” Sepúlveda told the local media 24 Horas.
The situation originated when De la Carrera began to insult violently, according to witnesses, the deputy Marcela Riquelme at the end of a session of the Chamber, which motivated Sepúlveda to intervene to calm things down.
The conservative deputy, a former member of the Republican Party, hit Sepúlveda, kicked him, and destabilized him, causing a minor injury to his face.
The incident was condemned by left and right-wing parties alike, and the ruling coalition Apruebo Dignidad announced that they would denounce the deputy to the Ethics Committee of the Lower House so that he may be sanctioned.
