Bolsonaro to attend UN General Assembly as part of his campaign plan

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, seeking an extension of his mandate in October, confirmed Tuesday that he would attend the UN General Assembly in September, hinting that he will use that platform to send “news” to Brazil during his campaign.

“Today I held the first session for the speech” to the United Nations General Assembly, which opens Sept. 20 at UN headquarters in New York, the head of state said in a “dialogue with candidates” organized by the National Union of Commerce and Services (Unecs).

Bolsonaro recalled that he would traditionally give the first speech in the General Assembly and that he anticipated in a campaign plan that he intended to “give news for Brazil, from there to here.”

He even said that he would have “fifteen minutes” for his speech but “try to make it twenty,” which would depend on the organizers of the General Assembly.

The Brazilian elections will take place on Oct. 2, a few days after the opening of the UN General Assembly debates in which Bolsonaro has participated in the last three years, always with speeches that have focused more on national issues than on the international agenda.
