Brazilian mining company Vale sentenced to another fine

The Brazilian mining company Vale was sentenced to another fine. The Brazilian Supreme Audit Institution had ruled that the company had failed to provide reliable information on the condition of the Brumadinho Dam before the 2019 disaster.

The agency, an arm of Brazil’s federal government, set the fine at R$86.3 million (US$16.8 million), the company said in a securities statement. Vale said it disagreed with the decision and would appeal within the next ten days.

The dam breach at Vale’s Córrego do Feijão mine in January 2019 claimed 270 lives and devastated forests, rivers, and nearby communities.

However, the latest fine represents only a fraction of the R$27 billion Vale has spent on compensation and removal of upstream tailings ponds.
