Uruguay’s President is the best-rated head of state in Latin America

The President of Uruguay, Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou, is the Latin American president with the highest approval rating in the region (74%), according to a survey conducted by “Ipsos.” At the same time, the smallest Spanish-speaking country in South America has the best economic rating in the region.

The “República Oriental del Uruguay” is also the country where most respondents believe inflation will decline over the next twelve months. Behind Lacalle – who has been president for more than two years – is his Chilean counterpart Gabriel Boric with 49% approval.

On the other hand, Boric has only been in office since March of this year. Lacalle and Boric are the heads of state of the only two countries whose residents consider them “full democracies.”

By contrast, the presidents with the lowest approval ratings are Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela (5%), Miguel Díaz-Canel of Cuba (14%), Pedro Castillo of Peru (15%), and Alberto Fernández of Argentina (19%).

Apart from the fact that these four heads of state do not receive more than 20% approval, each country has the worst economic rating and inflation expectations.

Respondents labeled Cuba and Venezuela as “authoritarian regimes,” while the remaining countries in the region were classified as “hybrid regimes.”

The region’s biggest challenges are economic growth and job creation (64%), reducing inflation, and stabilizing the economy (56%). At the bottom of the list are improvements in health and education, at 12% and 18%, respectively.
