Brazil will donate to Uruguay 10 M108 self-propelled howitzers and 11 Urutú armored vehicles

The Plenary of the Chamber of Deputies of the Brazilian National Congress approved, last Thursday, August 4, a bill authorizing the Brazilian government to donate to Uruguay 21 combat means that the Brazilian Army no longer uses.

The Senate examined the proposal PL 3212/21, authored by the Executive Branch.

Specifically, 10 M108 105 mm self-propelled howitzers and 11 Engesa EE-11 Urutu 6×6 armored personnel carriers will be donated.

The federal deputies approved the text of the parliamentarian Vinícius Carvalho (Republicanos-SP), which increased the number of donated armored vehicles.

The vehicles will be delivered in their current state of preservation, and the Army Command will bear the costs.

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

Carvalho pointed out that the Brazilian Army no longer uses M108s and Urutu 6×6 wheeled vehicles.

“The public administration no longer has any interest in using these vehicles and can dispose of them without prejudice to the fulfillment of its constitutional duties,” he said.

Carvalho recalled that the donation is part of the international cooperation policy with Mercosur partner countries.

“The proposal seeks to strengthen relations with our Mercosur partners, as well as to demonstrate that the transactions will not bring prejudice to our land forces in fulfilling their constitutional duties,” he said.

The vehicles will be delivered in their current state of preservation, and the Army Command will bear the costs.

The Brazilian government expects to spend about R$20,000 (US$3,920) to bring the armored vehicles to the 7th Mechanized Cavalry Regiment in Santana do Livramento, Rio Grande do Sul state, where they will be delivered to the Uruguayan Army.
