Cultural events in 200 locations in the city of São Paulo for Brazil’s independence celebration

Around 200 points in the capital of São Paulo will be the stage for cultural actions in honor of the Bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil. The program of the “Voices of Independence” project, organized by the City of São Paulo, will include music, cinema, theater and other arts from August 25th.

On the 7th, in addition to a grandiose historical revival, with the staging of the Grito da Ipiranga in Parque da Independência, there is also the traditional civic-military parade, which takes place again after two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But it will be held, instead of the Anhembi Sambadrome, on Avenida Dom Pedro Primeiro, and should have the participation, in addition to military personnel from the three Armed Forces, the Smoke Squadron and the Dragons of Independence.

BLOCK OF INDEPENDENTS

Artistic intervention composed by a troupe in a performance that will evoke stories of important characters in the history of Brazil, in a playful and didactic way. Sepé Tiaraju, Dandara dos Palmares, Anita Garibaldi, Anita Malfatti and Luiz Gama reach the public through a small group of long-legged players with allegorical dolls.

The group, accompanied by musicians and instrumentalists, sings and tells stories of these characters and their relationships with the history of Brazil. The project will feature music and special composition by Raquel Tobias and puppets and costumes by artist from Ceará Abmael Henrique.

INSURGENT VOICES

The exhibition “Vozes Insurgentes” presents a historical clipping of national heroes and heroines, characters that evoke the feeling emanating from the struggles throughout the social, economic and cultural construction of Brazil.

Bárbara de Alencar, Sepé Tiaraju, Antônio Conselheiro, Anita Garibaldi, Chico Mendes, Anita Malfatti, Chaguinhas, Maria da Penha, Zumbi dos Palmares, Dandara dos Palmares, Machado de Assis, Abdias do Nascimento, Luiz Gama, Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, Tiradentes, Anna Justina Ferreira Nery, Clara Filipa Camarão, Frei Caneca, Elza Soares, Ruth de Souza and Xica Manicongo, among others. These characters will be revisited and illustrated by the multi-artist Filipe Celestino.

OCCUPATION VOICES OF INDEPENDENCE

“What does the Bicentennial of Independence mean to you?”: Based on this question, the project wants to shed light on the meanings and symbolisms that this date represents for the population. Ten representative photographers from different social groups will take portraits of 200 people from all corners of the city. They are: Leonardo Souzza, Pan Alves, Deka Carvalho, Julio Leão, Chris Forcinito, Amandinha Pank, Kleber Cruz, Jonatas Marques, Cat Tenório, and Nica Nascimento.

In partnership with urban furniture companies, the project will occupy more than 200 points in the city, becoming a tool for a social media campaign to generate greater public engagement with the project and the theme.

VOICES OF IPIRANGA

“Vozes do Ipiranga” brings an immersive scenic experience in 3D audio where the public becomes the central character of the work, permanently available and free of charge at Parque da Independência.

While visiting the official history through scenes and audio bringing data, characters and remarkable facts of the well-known process of rupture with Portugal, the scenic sound experience is guided by invisible and forgotten voices, which were also part of the country’s independence process in the 19th century: blacks, women, the common people, the postman Paulo Emilio Bregaro and even one of the first workers present at the beginning of the construction of the Ipiranga Museum.

All the characters have their existences and memories inspired by their own hearts, in a poetic allusion to the heart of D. Pedro I, separated from his body by a request registered in his will.

The public is taken on a journey through time from a stimulating experience format that has 5 3D sound scenes present in 5 totems scattered throughout the Park, while their imagination is stimulated in a creative, immersive and educational encounter with one of the most important in the history of Brazil.

NETWORKED URBAN MEMORIES

Curated by historian Marly Rodrigues, the exhibition contextualizes the moment of preparation for the Ipiranga neighborhood for the commemoration of the 1st Centenary of Independence, with the creation of the Monument to Independence, addressing aspects of its historical representation and its symbology, the contest for choosing the Monument, Avenida D. Pedro I, the Crypt and the intervention projects of the Monument and the technical studies of the sculptural ensemble.

DE MONUMENTA

The project brings together the models of the artistic monuments implanted in São Paulo in the last century, as a result of the activities of the 1922 Art Week, the 4th Centenary of the City and the sesquicentennial of Independence. Using augmented reality resources, by directing the cell phone to the models gathered at Casa do Grito and distributed in Parque da Independência, the public will be able to experience a gamified experience, viewing the works in 360º.

MARQUISE’S SOIREE

At Solar da Marquesa de Santos, actress Beth Araújo presents Sarau no Solar with live performances of 19th century music, recitation of poems, reading of texts and love letters written by Emperor D. Pedro I during the time they were together . The project will feature special interventions by the actress playing Domitila, interacting with the public in the surroundings of Solar da Marquesa.

INDEPENDENT DIALOGUES

The Casa de Cultura do Ipiranga hosts an event that reflects the Bicentennial of Independence, provoking a critical reflection on Eurocentric historicity. At the Casa de Cultura Chico Science, debate panels will be held with cultural agents, artists, thinkers and researchers representing different social groups, to revisit history and bring the discussion about the meanings of the Independence of Brazil from various perspectives. As the closing of the actions, the “Baile da Independência” (Independence Ball).

CENTENARY OF VILA ITORORÓ

The Vila Itororó Palace, designed and built by the Portuguese Francisco de Castro, was inaugurated in 1922, as a commemorative monument to the centenary of Independence, due to the fountain found on the ground, which dated from 1822. On this occasion, the first year of the inauguration will be celebrated. and public opening of the architectural ensemble, as a cultural center, with a visual and musical show in a festival of projection mapped in the mansion, an unprecedented action in the space, accompanied by experimental music and contemporary dance with the Balé Jovem da Cidade.

MUNICIPAL THEATER

At the Theatro Municipal there is a special concert by the Marine Corps Symphonic Band, with a special repertoire in honor of the Bicentennial of Independence.

SP CINE

SPCine will integrate the project “Vozes da Independência” with the release of the newest film by Laís Bodansky and starring Cauã Reymond, “A Viagem de Pedro”.

The official launch will have a possible special participation of the actor and the director, in a session followed by a chat with the public. The film will integrate the SPCine Circuit and the Cineclubes that are held in municipal cultural facilities.

CIVIC-MILITARY PARADE

The traditional civic-military parade on September 7 will be held on Avenida D. Pedro I, as a way of integrating the bicentennial actions in the same territory. The event takes place between 9 am and 11 am, with the presence of members of the Imperial House and authorities.

VOICES OF INDEPENDENCE SHOW

Parque da Independência, the main landmark of the events of Independence of Brazil, becomes a great stage, where the history of the Grito do Ipiranga will be revisited, bringing the narrative of other cries of Independence of this continental, multicultural and diverse country.

The proposal is to approach, in a playful way, the processes and important historical characters that culminated in the act of Brazilian independence, emphasizing which structures change and which are perpetuated to the present day.

The famous scene that illustrates the events that culminated in national independence, will be staged in an apotheotic way, with the participation of the Brazilian army cavalry dressed in the official uniforms of the Dragons of Independence, and with its main character played by a great actor of Brazilian teledramaturgy.

In the cast, Letícia Sabatella as Anita Garibaldi, Heraldo Firmino as Machado de Assis, Naruna Costa as Bárbara de Alencar, Adanilo Antonio as Sepé Tiaraju, Marcello Airoldi as Antônio Conselheiro, Pascoal da Conceição as Chico Mendes, Kelly Campello as Anita Malfatti, Flávio Rodrigues as Chaguinhas, Georgette Fadel as Maria da Penha, Jairo Pereira as Zumbi dos Palmares.

The direction is by Georgette Fadel and Paula Klein. The dramaturgy is in charge of Dione Carlos and the research and soundtrack with Salloma Salomão.
