Colombia to ban bullfighting

Colombia will ban bullfighting. Over 40 congress members from various Colombian parties have presented a legislative initiative to sanction animal cruelty, which would mean a ban on bullfighting.

Proponents of the bill have stressed there is a good chance it will be approved. “It is accompanied by the signatures of more than 40 congress members, including Ariel Ávila, Katherine Miranda, Humberto de la Calle, and David Luna.

“These are very important signatures that give great legitimacy to this bill,” said Congressman Juan Carlos Losada, quoted by Caracol Radio.

It is not the first time that similar proposals to ban bullfighting have been put forward, so far without success.

“We believe the bill is much closer to the cause and rights of animals. With a government that has proposed to be the most animal-friendly government in history, Colombia can end once and for all the torture disguised as culture in bullrings,” Losada added.

However, it is not the first time that similar proposals to ban bullfighting have been put forward, so far without success, although organizations such as “Colombia sin Toreo” support them.

In the previous legislature, the proposal went as far as the third debate but was not put to vote in the Senate due to lack of time.
